  • Fatip Retro Double Edge Safety Razor - Chrome (Cromato)

The Fatip RETRO Safety Razor is the brand new “3 piece razor” recently introduced in the market. Its long and thin handle, with elegant engraving and a ball-end, gives a very comfortable grip.  Like the classic line, the RETRO is a well-balanced easy to use razor. The open comb head ensures that the razor will work well with differing lengths of beard growth. These Razors are available in 3 finishes: Nickel, Chrome and Gun Metal Black.  An artistic looking razor for the morning ritual of shaving.

The production of the razor today known as FATIP began in Milan in the 1950’s. Due to financial problems, the original manufacturer was bought out by an artisan scissor manufacturer. They took over the machinery and materials and continued the production for a few years then suspended it. It was only in the 1980’s, with innovative equipment and processes, that manufacturing started again and the FATIP brand was re-launched from the original designs. The quality & performance of the product was greatly improved, while maintaining the distinctive characteristics of the razor. Today Fatip is renowned and loved the world over for its style, handling and precision which combine with ease of use and inherent safety. It has been stated that Fatip is an excellent example of the “Made in Italy” brand and an ambassador of the “Art of Shaving” throughout the world.

All the Fatip Double Edge (DE) Safety Razors have the characteristic “open comb” head that made these products so special and famous all around the world.

How to Use: The FATIP Razor head is released by unscrewing the handle and lifting the cover to insert the blade. Slot the head cover back in place, screw and tighten the handle ensuring that the blade is in place and you're ready to go - Simple!

Recommended for All types of skin and especially those looking for a very close shave.

    Honest review

In all hoesty, I should have thrown or given this razor away after about 6 or 8 attempts of using it. It was like trying to shave with hedge trimmers. Lots of blood and raw skin with a variety of different blades and soaps. I guess I'm just too stubborn and stuck with it and am glad I did. Finally figured out the correct angle and get the best, closest, smoothest, most comfortable shaves. Great razor once you learn how to use it. It may take some time getting used to it, but it's worth it.

    The Beast

After just one shave with the Retro, I began thinking of a title for this review. The runner up was "The Widow Maker," but I figure that "The Beast" would be more inclusive as it covered both the married and unmarried among us.

I already owned a half-dozen closed comb DE razors and a couple of disposable blade straight razors. It was time for a closed-comb DE razor. My research suggested that Fatip had redesigned its open comb to make it less aggressive. If so, I cannot imagine a more aggressive razor.

The Retro did not disappoint visually. Though somewhat larger than expected, the fit and finish were satisfactory and the razor was well worth the price. I installed a new Personna Red blade, noting that though there was not as much play as with the Gentile, some blade alignment was necessary.

After the third pass with the Retro, I got one nick and the closest shave of my life. But it is just too darn aggressive for everyday use. Instead of using my straight razor to clean-up after my DE razor, I may use the Retro to clean up areas missed by my straight razor. The Retro's relatively low profile head also allows for it to shave some areas previously inaccessible by my DE razors (between moustache and nose).

I recommend the Retro to those seeking a well crafted, reasonably priced razor who are willing to accept a very aggressive shave in exchange for shave results that equal or exceed a straight razor.
