  • Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap Refill (NEW FORMULA)

Mitchell's Wool Fat soaps were first produced in the early 1930's by Bradford chemist Fred Mitchell who realised that the natural lanolin content of wool fat, which kept the hands of local sheep shearers and wool sorters so exceptionally soft, could also be beneficial to delicate complexions and sensitive skins

Mitchell's Wool Fat Soaps are still made to Mr. Mitchell's original formula, based on a recipe from the turn of the century and incorporating lanolin from the wool fat as the key ingredient.  The soaps are a simple and natural product with a delicate scent and is very popular among avid wet shavers.

    Amazing!

So I’m kinda new to the wet shave game I’ve got 6 fairly premium soaps I’ve been trying out. A Couple Razorock, and a few other brands
This is now, by far my most favourite!!!!
I was trying to whip up a nice lather in my ridged bowl that I have great results with normally.
It never really amazed me and was a bit tricky.
I’m using the Gigantic Beehive Pilsoft Brush.
I’ve found just really wetting the brush, giving a firm few swirls really pushing on the brush and going straight onto my wetted face produces an amazing thick and slick result.
I don’t load for very long and have found I have an abundance of soap at the end (possibly wastefulness actually)
Play with the water content on your brush and you’ll be amazed! It’s actually not a fussy soap at all to get a good result with.

Lather is very airy and it dissipates.

    My "go to"

Mitchell's Wool Fat soap is my #1 soap. Fresh, but subtle, scent in the English fashion. Some folks report problems with lathering, but it is not a problem in my house. Boar brush & time: don't rush it. Give it time (and WATER) to build in your bowl or your face. I don't use this soap if I'm in a hurry, but it is certainly worth the time. Protects the face, gives good lubrication, and the way my face feels after shaving & before application of any balm or splash . . . soft as your cheeks were before becoming a man.

One tip, however. Some will tell you to bloom this; what I've learned online and from personal experience is to soak the puck overnight, drain off any excess water the next day, and make regular use of the soap, and COVER it between uses. Failure to use the soap at least a couple of times a week will cause the puck to dry up, crack and will cause difficulty in lathering until you hydrate the puck again.

    Good soap

Why does Mitchell's make this soap puck so huge? Maybe I'm crazy, but this thing is probably the largest soap puck I've ever bought...and it it cannot fit in my Van Der Hagen full-size soap bowl. You can't melt this stuff to fit in there any better, so the cheese grater it is, unless you do as I've been doing and let it sit on the top rim of the lather cup and run the brush around that way. The soap is slick and I do find the lathering process to feel a bit different. By different, I mean I think the lanolin is probably affecting the way I perceive the lather itself. But, I don't think it is necessarily more difficult to lather this soap. I might want to give it an extra star in the winter time, as other reviews I have read describe the soap as being better for your skin than other soaps because of the lanolin content protecting your face in the winter's cold. But, since I've yet to use it in the winter, I can't say. I predict it would, for most intents and purposes, make little difference. Arko soap dries your skin, for instance, so you'd want to avoid a soap like that in winter if your skin doesn't produce a lot of oil. But, I'd say this soap is about on par with other premium soaps such as those from Steambath Factory. Slightly nicer post-shave than some vegetable based soaps from Italian Barber / Razor Rock. But, again, it's all about personal preference and how much you'd be willing to pay for a puck of soap!

    4.5 really!

The only thing that prevents this soap from getting a 5 star review is it's fickle nature when it comes to lathering. Water temp, water to soap ratio, water hardness. If anything is off, this can turn into a bubbly, thin waste of 'not quite so cheap' shave soap. That being said, when this lathers up, it lathers rich and thick and can leave behind a soft smooth slick feeling to your skin, even after some aggressive shaving. Without any other products, I have found myself having a decent chance at an irritation free neck post shave. Even better, take the puck, apply it directly to your wet stubble, then lather on your face with another shave soap. Rich, great lather and the benefit of the slick coating of the wool fat, without the hassle. Smell is take it or leave it, but mild enough to be covered with another soap or aftershave.
